The name Amedeo Modigliani (1884 -1920) conjures up the image of a cursed artist whose works at auctions are currently sold for dizzying sums. This installation relegates the legendary romantic artist that we have made of him to the background and provides a scientific focus on the painted and sculpted matter of his works instead.
Modigliani’s Secrets opens the doors to laboratories where science and materials enter into dialogue with the history of art and heritage, revealing the equipment and techniques employed for analyses. Next, in the studio where Modigliani created his works, it evokes the sculptor’s materials and tools, and then the painter’s (canvases, frames, preparation, pigments and binders), his way of working (actions, brushwork and palette) and the network of professionals that he associated with (art dealers, paint suppliers and collectors). Scientific studies also enable us to see the invisible, penetrating a painting’s successive layers and possibly revealing abandoned or modified compositions beneath. Finally, Jacques Loeuille’s film Modigliani et ses Secrets puts such research into perspective, in the light of Modigliani’s visual evolutions and the context in which he lived..
Since 2018, the LaM has been promoting and co-directing a research project alongside the Museums of France Centre for Research and Restoration (C2RMF), in association with the National Centre for Scientific Research (CNRS), Paris’ Technical Institute of Chemistry (ENSCP), the University of Lille’s Miniaturisation for Synthesis, Analysis and Proteomics Laboratory (MSAP), the “Colour and Visual Effects” division of the Centre for Research on Conservation (CRC), and the eleven partner museums. The corpus is composed of 25 paintings and 3 sculptures by Modigliani, all from French public collections.
It covers his work from his arrival in Paris to his death in January 1920. The project draws us into the artist’s world, helping us better understand his extraordinary technical mastery and map out its evolution.
